Your Hair and That Big Interview

- Getting the most out of your hairdresser.
Got a big date? Got an important interview? Then for God’s sakes, man, do something about that hair! What’s the connection? According to a recent Yale University study commissioned by the team launching Physique®, a new hair care line introduced by Procter & Gamble, a lot. As it turns out, you’re not just a ninny. The study shows that having a so-called "bad hair day" negatively affects self-esteem, and diminishes self-confidence — actually inhibiting peak performance. No kidding. More interestingly, the Yale team reports that this phenomenon is more likely to affect SharpMen then SharpWomen.
What’s the point?
To the extent you’re practicing your smooth moves and patented interview answers, take a moment to get that quaff under control:
Step One: Schedule a haircut — instructing the stylist take off less, rather than more.
Step Two: Invest in a few of those hair-care products he/she keeps trying to push off on you. Then spend a few more minutes having your hairdresser teach you exactly how to apply and blow-dry for game day. Don’t be shy — it’s your cash. Don’t leave until you feel confident that you have some understanding of how to re-create the look yourself.
Step Three: In the days before the event, make a habit of taking time to practice the routine. Like baseball or that musical instrument your mother always wanted you to play, you’ll never get good unless you practice.
Step Four: Make a point of waking up earlier on the day of the date or interview, and leave yourself a nice cushion of time in which to become neurotic about the state of your hair. Hey, it’s gonna happen. But according to the folks at Yale, your game will be better for it.
